Xylitol ist ein Zuckeralkohol, der als Süßstoff verwendet wird. Xylitol wird als Polyalkohol oder Zuckeralkohol (Alditol) kategorisiert. Es hat die Formel CH2OH (CHOH) 3CH2OH und ist ein achirales Isomer von Pentan-1,2,3,4,5-pentol. Xylitol ist etwa so süß wie Saccharose (Tischzucker), mit 33% weniger Kalorien. Im Gegensatz zu anderen natürlichen oder synthetischen Süßstoffen ist Xylitol für die Zahngesundheit von Vorteil, indem sie die Karies (Hohlräume) auf ein Drittel im regelmäßigen Gebrauch reduziert und für die Remineralisierung hilfreich ist. Mehrere Studien, die Elektronenmikroskopie verwenden, haben gezeigt, dass Xylitol wirksam ist, um eine Remineralisierung von tieferen Schichten von demineralisiertem Email zu induzieren. Es wurde festgestellt, dass Xylit (als Kaugummi, Lutschtabletten, Nasenspray etc.) die Inzidenz einer akuten Mittelohrentzündung bei gesunden Kindern reduziert hat.
